A neat photo showing how basic things were back in the day. 1955 Sebring. Fred Allen’s #46 Austin Healey 100S heads for an old hangar that was serving as the event garage. Note the Choice of Champions Amoco sign just to the right of the door.

1955 Watkins Glen. A village workshop houses Bill Spear’s 300S Maserati, Briggs #61 OSCA and both a Cunningham C-4R and C-4K as well as the winning #60 D Type Jaguar. Not quite what you would see the #1 team in racing have today.
A closer view of the shop Cunningham rented to work on his cars. The two Cunningham C4’s were out of date but still managed to finish 7th & 8th. Spear’s Maserati was 2nd. Is that Briggs himself wearing the white hat?
1955 Watkins Glen. Big Jake, the Allard JR with driver Big Jake Bucher (behind open door) in the paddock looking at the uphill section of the track. Bucher led the Seneca Cup but had troubles. The uphill you see is still part of the track in 2024.
1955 Watkins Glen. The first Sadler Special comes out of Tech with Bill Sadler driving. This car did not have the big Chevy engines we all remember Sadler’s using. It was an FM 1500cc 4 cyl Jowett Jupiter powered car.
1955 Watkins Grand Prix. Candy Poole’s PBX was quite a story. The car was a success with its Crosley motor and custom built Fiat chassis. Happily the PBS exists today beautifully restored and still raced by Santo Spedaro. We love folks like Sant
1955 Watkins Glen. A typical Spankey Smith photo with the car cut in half, but a great view of how close the spectators were to the track, separated only by a wood slat snow fence. This version of the track was very fast and this Cunningham was do

The Scarab Mk I sits in the morning fog. The paint scheme and pinstriping were done by west coast artist VonDutch. The next 2 versions were right hand drive. The people who Reventlow put together to build the cars all became hall of famers.
1958 Montgomery, NY. Sunday morning and Lance Reventlow looks over at Joe Tierno snapping his photo. The Scarabs arrived early morning from California. The truck driver first went to Montgomery, AL by mistake. We on the east coast had not seen thes
