Sherm Decker in the Cooper-Ford. Sherm won easily once Ed Lowther’s Genie dropped out.
The body was highly modified by Roy Gane at Penske’s and never fit very well. Penske sold the car after Laguna 1963 without engine because the tires kept rubbing the body. But Decker got it fixed and it was fast.
The grid is full of people. Sherm looks a bit impatient and wants to get going. A good look at Lowther’s Genie and the 250LM Ferrari of Dick Holquist.
On the grid with Sherm on pole, Chuck Dietrich in the middle, Doc Wyllie on the outside. Ed Lowther’s Genie #7 and Bob Grossman in the big Ferrari #96.
Sherm is looking over to the starter, Dietrich doesn’t seem interested.
The drag race is on. Lowther makes a great start from the second row and is alongside Sherm. Dietrich’s Elva is hanging tough at this point.
The race is over and Peg Wyllie grins as her husband has finished second in the new Elva-BMW.
A grinning gal is going for a ride in the Holquist driven, Bill McKelvey owned 250LM Ferrari. I bet she wasn’t too happy at the end of the race as the car ran out of fuel and was a dnf.
The every cheerful Newt Davis stands next to his Lotus 30.. We’re not sure where Next finished but he sure had a lovely lady laughing over something.
Another pit gal stands next to Bob Hutchins who was driving Tom O’Brien’s Ferrari 196SP. O’Brien raced the car at many events in 1965.
A happy Alan Friedland climbs out of his Elva after winning FM and finishing 3rd overall. His wife Phyllis (in white), Harry Reynolds (left no shirt) and Jack Deren (striped shirt) congratulate.
Donna Mae Mimms #23 TR-3 leads Brian Fuerstenau in another Group 44 prepared TR-3. Furstenau won with DMM second
The winner Fuerstenau gives Donna Mae a ride on the victory lap. Furstenau was also Donna Mae’s mechanic. Brian spun early but recovered to win.
Donna Mae proudly displays here BARC sticker on the pink TR-3
Dick Gilmartin won the GP & HP race in his Spitfire, also prepared by Group 44. I last saw Gilmartin at Amelia island with a vodka rocks in his hand.
Bob Johnson brought a “west coast” Mustang GT350 to win BP. Here he has a laugh with Dick Thompson. Johnson was protested but found 200 lbs overweight.
Post race chilly lagers are always called for. Sherm looks a bit put out, but is just smacking his lips. Newt Davis is on the right and Kathy Bishara behind.
Another celebration show. Decker on the left has a laugh with Alan Friedland while Jack Deren munches a huge hot dog.
The always cool Bob Grossman was in the 330SP LeMans Ferrari. Another Bill McKelvey car. The Ferrari lost its clutch and did not finish.
George Alderman dismounts his Honda. We’re not sure what happened to Alderman’s Cooper Alfa.
Dave Nicholas adjusts Jack Deren’s sun glasses while Jack continues to hold his giant hot dog.
On the grid for my fist SCCA National race. My cousin Roy Bishara gives advice while Fred Reynolds and wife observe.
I sit on the grid waiting the drop of the flag. For you young ones, in those days every race was a standing start.
I glance over at Dave Zych who is taking the photo. Fred Reynolds MG in the foreground and Gene Ribas Alfa behind. I am doing my best black helmet with red stripe Dan Gurney look.
Finally going. I was in the US Army at the time and went through the car at the Ft. Dix motor pool. We flushed the brake fluid and poor, naive me did not realize that army spec brake fluid was very low temperature. I was running a fantastic 6th w
By this time my brakes are boiling. At first the pedal went to the floor, but pumping would get some pressure back. I never stopped and finished 8th pumping the brake pedal with my left foot going down the straights. A lesson well learned that on
After the race Spankey Smith was so pissed at me for dropping back out of the points. Of course he had no idea my brakes were gone until I couldn’t stop and rolled past him yelling “no brakes”.
Jack Lawrence in what some say is an Elva Mk VI, was a late entrant but won GM over some stiff competition.
